چکیده
This review should be cited as: Hofmeyr GJ, Kulier R. Abdominal decompression in normal pregnancy (Cochrane Review). In: The Cochrane Library, Issue 3, 2002. Oxford: Update Software. A substantive amendment to this systematic review was last made on 08 November 1997. Cochrane reviews are regularly checked and updated if necessary. Background: Abdominal decompression was developed as a means of pain relief during labour. It has also been used for complications of pregnancy, and in healthy pregnant women in an attempt to improve fetal wellbeing and intellectual development. Objectives: The objective of this review was to assess the effects of prophylactic abdominal decompression on admission for pre-eclampsia, fetal growth, perinatal morbidity and mortality and childhood development. Search strategy: The Cochrane Pregnancy and Childbirth Group trials register and the Cochrane Controlled Trials Register were searched. Date of last search: October 2001. Selection criteria: Randomised trials comparing abdominal decompression with dummy decompression or no treatment in healthy pregnant women. Data collection and analysis: Eligibility and trial quality were assessed by one reviewer. Main results: Three studies were included. There was no difference between the abdominal decompression groups and the control groups for low birth weight (relative risk 0.69, 95% confidence interval 0.27 to 1.77) and perinatal mortality (relative risk 2.47, 95% confidence interval 0.77 to 7.92). There were no differences in admission for pre-eclampsia,

Main results: Outcome data are currently available for four trials. Patients tended to be a selected elderly group with disability. Overall, the odds ratios (95% confidence interval) for death, death or institutionalisation, death or dependency at the end of scheduled follow up were 0.87 (0.39-1.93), 0.69 (0.36-1.31) and 0.88 (0.49-1.57) respectively. Apparent benefits were more evident in the ...
متن کاملHalogenation as a Strategy to Improve Antiplasmodial Activity: A Report of New 3-Alkylpyridine Marine Alkaloid Analogs
Introduction: Due to the emergence of resistance to antimalarial drugs as well as the lack of vaccination for malaria, there is an urgent demand for the development of new antimalarial alternatives. Recently, our research group developed a new set of 3-alkylpyridine marine alkaloid analogs, of which a compound known as compound 5 was found to be inactive against Plasmodium ...
متن کاملVolumetric capnography and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease staging
Spirometry is difficult for some COPD patient to perform. Volumetric capnography could be a second choice test to evaluate the severity of functional disturbances. The aim of this work is to test this hypothesis. A total number of 98 subjects were classified either as normal ex-smokers (N=14) or COPD patients. The latter were staged following GOLD recommendations. Spirometry and volumetric capn...
متن کاملFluid therapy and perfusional considerations during resuscitation in critically ill patients with intra-abdominal hypertension.
Intra-abdominal hypertension (IAH) and abdominal compartment syndrome (ACS) are consistently associated with morbidity and mortality among the critically ill or injured. Thus, avoiding or potentially treating these conditions may improve patient outcomes. With the aim of improving the outcomes for patients with IAH/ACS, the World Society of the Abdominal Compartment Syndrome recently updated it...
متن کاملIntra-abdominal hypertension and abdominal compartment syndrome in burns, obesity, pregnancy, and general medicine.
Intra-abdominal hypertension (IAH) is an important contributor to early organ dysfunction in trauma and sepsis. However, relatively little is known about the impact of intra-abdominal pressure (IAP) in general internal medicine, pregnant patients, and those with obesity or burns. The aim of this paper is to review the pathophysiologic implications and treatment options for IAH in these specific...
